Council tax charges are collected by local authorities and are used to pay for the services provided.  The council tax charges that must be paid for a particular dwelling will be determined by the band to which it has been allocated and the rate the local authority sets for that band. The cost will therefore depend on the value of the property and the council in which it is located. There are council tax benefits and discounts that may be available and some properties may be exempt from the charge.
